Understanding Pork in Your Dog's Diet

Since launching our all-natural Aussie pork treats, we’ve seen an amazing response from dog lovers. Pork has long been an underutilised protein in the pet world, so it’s no surprise our range has sparked lots of interest—and plenty of great questions from curious pet owners.

The good news is that pork is a fantastic option for dogs. It’s rich in high-quality protein, packed with essential amino acids, and naturally high in B vitamins like thiamine. With a variety of textures and cuts to choose from, pork makes an excellent treat—whether you’re looking to support your dog’s health, keep them happily chewing, or simply spoil them with something delicious.

We’re proud to be leading the way and shining a light on the benefits of pork. If you’re looking to add variety, flavour, and nutrition to your dog’s diet, pork is a protein that you – and your dog - can get excited about.

Why haven’t we seen more pork-based dog foods?

Great question—and one we get a lot! The truth is, pork has traditionally been underused in pet food not because it’s unhealthy, but largely due to supply and demand. In the past, other meats like chicken and beef were more readily available in large quantities for pet food manufacturers, making them the go-to choices. Pork was often reserved for human consumption, especially in countries like Australia where it's seen as a premium meat.

As consumer awareness grows and interest in food variety and quality for pets increases, pork is finally getting the attention it deserves in the pet world. It's an excellent protein choice for dogs—and one that many of them absolutely love.

Is pork safe for your dogs to eat?

Absolutely. Just like beef, chicken, or lamb, pork—when it's fresh or air-dried—is a great source of protein and nutrients and is safe as part of a balanced diet. The key is keeping it simple: avoid any marinades or sauces meant for human meals.

It’s also important to steer clear of processed meats like ham and bacon. These often contain preservatives that aren’t suitable for dogs.

Why do some people say pork is hard for dogs to digest?

This idea often comes from the belief that pork is always high in fat, which can sometimes lead to digestive issues—especially if dogs are given fatty scraps or heavily processed pork products. But this is only part of the picture.

In reality, just like with any other meat, pork has a wide range of cuts—some fattier, and others incredibly lean. Our range is made using specific parts of the pig that are not only nutritious, but also naturally suited for treating and chewing. We focus on cuts that are rich in cartilage, connective tissue, and muscle—great sources of protein and amino acids that support your dog’s overall health.

Importantly, all our pork treats are air-dried, a gentle process that locks in nutrients without the need for artificial preservatives, fillers or additives. This makes them easier for dogs to digest compared to highly processed alternatives, and provides a satisfying texture dogs love to chew on.

So while any protein can be difficult to digest—if it's processed or overly fatty—our air-dried PAWK treats are a completely different story: clean, simple, and designed with your dog’s wellbeing in mind.

Are pig's ears too fatty for dogs?

It’s a common question, and the short answer is: not when fed in moderation. Like all proteins, different cuts come with different fat levels—and fat isn’t the enemy! In fact, it’s an essential nutrient that helps support healthy skin, a shiny coat, and energy levels.

Our pig’s ears are naturally high in protein (around 68%), and made up largely of cartilage and connective tissue, which not only makes them great for chewing but also provides important amino acids your dog needs for muscle and joint health.

As with any treat, portion control is key. Pig’s ears are best served occasionally as part of a varied diet. And if your dog is on a lower-fat plan or has specific dietary needs, we also offer leaner pork options—like our PAWK pizzles—for a satisfying chew with less fat.

What about the idea that pork is full of worms?

This myth has been around for a long time, but it doesn’t reflect the way pork is raised today—especially in Australia. The concern originally came from outdated farming practices where pigs had access to unsanitary conditions, increasing the risk of parasites. That’s simply not the case anymore.

Thanks to modern, tightly regulated farming and hygiene standards, Australian pork is clean, safe, and produced under strict biosecurity guidelines. Since we raise our own pigs, we have full oversight of how they’re cared for—and we can confidently say our pork is free from parasites and safe for your dog to enjoy.

In short: no worms, just responsibly sourced, high-quality pork!

Is pork less nutritious than other meats?

Not at all. Different meats offer different nutritional benefits, and pork is no exception. It’s rich in protein and amino acids, and it stands out for its high levels of B vitamins—especially thiamine, which is often lacking in home-cooked or raw diets.

Like humans, dogs thrive on variety. Including a mix of protein sources helps ensure they get a wide range of nutrients.

In summary

When it comes to feeding your dog, balance and variety are key. Pork can absolutely be part of a healthy, diverse diet, especially when it’s natural, high-quality, and unprocessed.

Treats like our PAWK pork range are made to complement your dog’s meals—not replace them. And of course, nothing beats seeing them enjoy something that’s both tasty and nutritious.
